Tips for visiting Catania and Eastern Sicily

Catania is a convenient base for discovering Eastern Sicily. From here you can explore the historic centre on foot and easily plan trips to Etna, Taormina, Syracuse and Ortigia.

Good to know

  • Catania's historic centre is easy to visit on foot, especially Piazza Duomo, Via Etnea and the fish market.
  • For Etna, Taormina and Syracuse you can choose train, bus, car, private transfers or guided tours depending on your time.
  • In summer it is better to start early, especially for day trips and the busiest destinations.

Catania

Historic centre, markets and city life

To discover Catania, spend at least one day in the historic centre. Start from Piazza Duomo, continue along Via Etnea, visit the fish market in the morning and choose one cultural stop such as Teatro Bellini, the Benedictine Monastery or Castello Ursino.

What to see

Piazza Duomo, the Cathedral, Elephant Fountain, Via Etnea, fish market, Teatro Bellini, Benedictine Monastery, Castello Ursino and San Giovanni Li Cuti.

Getting around

In the centre, walking is the easiest option. For longer distances you can use the metro, AMTS buses, taxis or Alibus to and from the airport.

Parking

The centre can be busy and parking is not always immediate. Before arrival, check blue-line spaces, guarded parking or AMTS park-and-ride options.

What to eat

Try: arancino, pasta alla Norma, cartocciata, cipollina, granita with brioche, cannoli, fresh fish and seltz with lemon and salt.

Taormina

Ancient Theatre, historic centre and Isola Bella

Taormina is one of the best day trips from Catania. In one day you can visit the Ancient Theatre, walk along Corso Umberto, stop at panoramic terraces and, in season, go down towards Isola Bella.

How to arrive

From Catania you can take the train to Taormina-Giardini station and then continue to the centre by bus or taxi. By car, the main route is the A18 motorway.

What to see

Ancient Theatre, Corso Umberto, Piazza IX Aprile, Villa Comunale, Isola Bella and Castelmola for extra views.

Parking

If you arrive by car, use structured car parks such as Lumbi or Porta Catania. The historic centre is best visited on foot.

Food tip

For a quick break choose granita, cannoli or a tavola calda snack. For lunch or dinner, check menus and location carefully, especially on the most central streets.

Syracuse and Ortigia

Archaeology, sea lanes and historic centre

Syracuse works well split into two parts: Neapolis Archaeological Park in the morning and Ortigia in the afternoon. If you only have one day, choose a few stops and enjoy the centre without rushing.

How to arrive

From Catania you can reach Syracuse by train, bus or car. If you drive, always factor in time to enter the city and find parking near Ortigia.

What to see

Greek Theatre, Ear of Dionysius, Roman Amphitheatre, Ortigia's Piazza Duomo, Arethusa Fountain, market and seafront.

Parking

Ortigia has limited-traffic zones and parking is not always easy. Leave the car on the edge, for example at Talete when available, and continue on foot.

Where to eat

Ortigia market is ideal for an informal break. For dinner, look for small restaurants in side streets and prefer simple, not-too-long Sicilian menus.

Etna

Craters, lava landscapes and coastal views

Etna is one of the most recommended trips during a stay in Catania. In a short time everything changes: landscape, temperature, light and atmosphere. Choose guided tours, jeep routes, light trekking, wineries or sunset visits.

How to arrive

From central Catania, the south side near Rifugio Sapienza is one of the most common options. You can arrive by car, seasonal connections or organised tours.

What to do

Popular experiences include Silvestri craters, lava trails, guided tours, photography, tastings in Etna villages and the cable car when operating.

What to bring

Bring comfortable shoes, a jacket, water and sunglasses. Even in summer it can be cool or windy at altitude.

Safety

For higher routes, rely on authorised guides. Always check weather, volcanic activity and lift openings before leaving.
